This very early Teke figure known as Buti, was a magical charm used by ritual specialist in divination, for protection against sorcery and to direct vengeance. A mass of ingredients called “bonga” was inserted into the abdominal cavity, the body is encased by leather. The face incised by linear striations, the round cap and beard are attributed to a chief. The figure is in fine condition with some abrasions.
