The Chokwe carved a vast number of impressive functional objects like this superb mortar of a crouching figure with hands to the head and elbows resting on it’s knees. The expressive face attracts our attention with a deep brown patina, a copper ring is attached to the torso. This charming Chokwe mortar was used for grinding tobacco or hemp and was a prestige object that elevated the owner’s status.
