Baule spirit spouses were prescribed by diviners and carved to represent an alternate wife from the spirit world.  These figures were conceived as a receptacle, a dwelling place for spirits to appease, honor and communicate with the owner.  They represent the ideal woman that embody physical perfection plus moral, social and intellectual achievement.  The seated figure has an elongated torso, elegant hands resting on her abdomen, scarification and a rich, dark patina.
